My name is Jason Staub. I'm from Centreville, Virginia (outside of DC). I'm currently undeclared, but my plan is to work in a recording studio. Music has been a huge part of my life. I am a multi-instrumentalist (I play drums and guitar). For my narrative, I plan on writing either about the musician community or my hometown, which has also had a big impact on who I am today.

Jason,
ReplyDeleteBoth of these topics have potential. I would caution you, if you choose to write about your hometown, to make sure you have enough characteristics and experiences to draw upon that make your hometown distinctly different from the typical "hometown." I think it can be done, but I encourage you to make a list of what those characteristics are so that you have something substantial to write about without running into the wall of having to write about hometowns in general.
I think writing about the musician community works well because you will be able to draw upon your personal experiences as a musician and create a strong personal account. Composing music is different from composing other art. Through this topic, you will have the opportunity to explain how this community is different from say the freelance writer community or the poet community.
I too am part of the music production community and I think that this is a great idea. Make sure to touch on the different ways music inspires you. This will surely bring out an amazing piece. The hometown idea seems too ordinary. You could really expand on the music idea.
ReplyDeleteI too like the music idea. I love music as well but unfortunately I do not play any instruments but wish i did. I think you could also talk about how your hometown has had an impact on your musical interests or type of music you produce.
ReplyDeleteI like your idea about belonging to the musicians community. I think that would be really interesting to expand on and to show how it had shaped you into the person you are today. I've always thought that it would be really cool to know how to play an instrument, especially the guitar, but I never actually tried. I also really like Chris's idea above about combining your ideas and writing about how your hometown has had an impact on your life as a musician, but that might be more difficult.
