My name is Christopher Davis and I am a Health Sciences major from Chesapeake, Virginia, which is near Virginia Beach. My lifelong dream has always been to somehow help people in life, whether this would be through medicine, volunteering or even teaching. Physical Therapy became a true dream of mine when I injured my knee my sophomore year. I was doing therapy so much that I began to truly love what they were doing. As hig school went on, I volunteered at therapy facilities and thought maybe I could fulfill my dream of helping people by going into the practice of physical therapy. Also, it could possibly bring me a job with Duke basketball. The community I am choosing to write about is Duke Basketball. Since I was 4 years old I have been following Duke with all my heart. It is a true passion for me and a special community I feel happy to be a part of. In this narrative essay, I want to explain why it's so special to me and why I follow it like a religion.

I like that you sort of threw a curveball at us here. When I started reading it I honestly expected your community to be about physical therapy (which I'm assuming is your major?). But it led right into your Duke basketball community. I'm looking forward to reading about how it transformed into such a passion.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Stina in that I expected you to write about the physical therapy community! I definitely think you can use the Duke Basketball community, but keep in mind that there are many communities within this one. There is the college basketball community at large, there are the Duke Basketball fans that have their own community standards and rituals, and then there are the team and the players that live within their own community. While the dynamic of the team and the fan base are certainly related, they are two different communities and I encourage you to explore that.
ReplyDeleteCertainly include a personal account that explains what makes you a member of this community and while you feel so passionately about them. I don't know if you've thought about what research you want to use, but you can focus on a big event in their team's history whether it was a national win or a legal allegation. I think with sports teams its tempting to focus on a positive experience, but uncomfortable and unplanned situations can be defining community moments.
I also think that you should write about the physical therapy community. Your writing shows that it is something that you really enjoy. I think it will be easier for you to write about than Duke basketball.
ReplyDeleteAs a huge sports fan i can relate to your passion for Duke basketball. Being a passionate fan of a team can definitely effect the way you live and I think you have a unique community to write about.
