I came up with a few different ideas to write my narrative on. Some topics include my vegetarian lifestyle, growing up in a smalltown, and being a musician. I'm leaning towards one of the first two for several reasons. With a vegetarian paper, I could explain the "why" factor to my audience (and I have more than just one reason why). With a "smalltown" narrative, I could really show the characteristics of my super-rural hometown and even share some humorous anecdotes on the topic. Either one I feel comfortable writing about.

Christian,
ReplyDeleteBoth of these topics sound good! If you write about the vegetarian community, there is plenty of research out there about the different kinds of vegetarians and how health recommendations for a vegetarian diet have changed over the years. Keep in mind this is a BIG topic so it is probably best to focus on your personal story and your own reasons for choosing a vegetarian lifestyle and then move fro there.
Depending up on your core reasons, this may lead you to look into animal farming and factory farming. I caution you to be conscious of your tone. This is not an argumentative paper, rather, you are introducing your community to a someone who is not a member. I’ve seen students slip into a defensive tone when writing about topics like this. I think this has the potential to be a great narrative, though, and I am a vegetarian, too!
If you want to focus on the small town, consider if you want to describe characteristics of YOUR hometown or of small towns in general. Do you think your town is unique enough to position it as its own community distinctive from the typical American "small town" community? If so, explore those characteristics that define who is/not a member.
I would suggest going with the vegetarian route because people are familiar with the topic but may not be enlightened as to what the lifestyle is like. You could include stories or research about your current lifestyle and why you chose it.
ReplyDeleteI think writing about being a vegetarian would be easier. You could write about why you chose to become a vegetarian. For the research portion, you could possibly research others' reasons for becoming vegetarians and the benefits vegetarianism provides.
